Did you just call me crazy? or did I? or did JOAN?????
When I signed up for this blog hop I knew I wanted to use a crazy patch die from Accuquilt
I used the small 6″ Crazy patch die
(They also have a bigger one!)
I really like this size because I can cut out pieces from a layer cake! and I happened to have a few 10″ squares leftover from another project so I figured I’d come up with SOMETHING with those. Here I laid out 6 of them on the die and cut out all at once.
Then I shuffled the pieces around, (take 1 piece from one pile and move to the bottom, take 2 from another and move to the bottom, then 3 etc)
Then I started sewing as much together as I could in one sitting before pressing.
After pressing each time, I reversed the pieces (because they already got reversed once from sewing and pressing) and put back on the die to make sure they were in the right order
and kept going
Then I finally had 6 blocks!
I then sewed them into a top like this
and here’s a “mistake”, I meant to do the crazy stitching on batting and backing but I think I took a break from sewing and did this the next day or something, so I FORGOT my plan….
It’s still a lot of fun to try those fancy stitches on the sewing machine I NEVER use and change the thread colors!
I waited then for some beige fabric (this is a faint mottled fabric from MMF where I recently got a fabric order from)
After adding a border the quilt measures 16″ x 22″ (incl 2″ borders)
It felt silly to long arm quilt, but maybe I should have- MISTAKE #2!!!
I pinned to batting and backing and sit straight stitch quilted it and marked with a frixion pen around the border
I got a lot of puckers or pulls on the border- bummer!! and it got skewed a lot……
Oh well…. it’s a small project, so not a big loss, it’s still nice and maybe I’ll keep it and use it for something, I don’t know.
If you’re curious about other crazy patch quilts, I’ve made several projects over the years since Accuquilt got the 2 dies, one set was Christmas stockings that got LOST in the mail!!!-what’s up with this die and things going wrong????
Here’s some inspiration 🙂 Another 6″ block one where I only shuffled around the middle piece of the block!
A quick table runner
A big quilt with the BIG die
A Christmas quilt, I believe this pattern is still on Accuquilt’s website- this is the quilt I made for them
and this is the only picture I have of the missing STOCKINGS! They actually remade them in-house for the pattern.
Thanks to JOAN for hosting this blog hop, here’s the other CRAZY participants!!

All of your “crazy” quilts are pretty. I love the variety of stitches in the first one, the little blue quilt. It was a while before I even realized that some of those fancy machine stitches can actually be used in quilting.
thanks, it’s a fun die to use and a fun block to make
Your crazy quilt is crazy-beautiful! Quilting after doing the decorative stitching sounds very challenging, but you did it!
I love all those crazy quilts! I have been wanting that die for some time. Maybe this year I’ll get it. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
What a sweet idea – a crazy patch block. I know I’d forget which pile of pieces I’d done and which I hadn’t!! That was a super idea. Sometimes things don’t work out the way we have them in our head – what’s that about?? Really love the red, pink, white crazy block.
I think they turned out nice. I like using fancy stitches in quilts too.
Beautiful quilts. I keep thinking about getting that die. So great to see it used in so many color ways.
I may have to get that die! I love the idea of using it with layer cakes and leftover fabrics. All of your projects look beautiful with that die cutting method. Nice job of showing off some craziness, Bea!
You’ve certainly taken the challenge to the max! 😁. Thanks for sharing your crazy projects.
A great way to use those stitches on your sewing machine for sure. Nice quilts you’ve made.
All great projects! The machine stitching is fun, but I love doing them by hand. The one you made for this, with the puckers you don’t like, is really pretty colors and I think it would make a great table centerpiece. Thanks for sharing so many pretty pictures.
I’ve got that die too and have been meaning to use it for a while now! I actually dragged it out the other day… Love ALL the projects you shared, so much crazy fun! xx
That die looks like so much fun to work with. I especially love where you just changed the color of the middle. Thanks for sharing!
What a great little project to play with your machine’s special stitches. It does take some adjustment to switch from machine quilting to long arm and then back again.
Great idea for a Crazy bloghop!! Your little blue quilt is gorgeous – I love how you used your machine stitches. Lots of lovely eye candy with all the other pieces you have made.
Lots of eye candy with your crazy quilts!!! I LOVE the idea of putting the pieces back on the die to ensure they are in the correct position!
Happy Quilting!
