Bowl cozies and baskets

A friend of mine reminded me of bowl cozies to sell at the craft show, so in ONE day I cut out scrap batting and fabrics and made 8 x 2 sets of bowl cozies with the BIG Accuquilt die!

I have a BIG blue bin with scrap batting (pieces that are not big enough for quilts, maybe table runners but can be for eyeglass cases or small purses etc. I started cutting out and that kind of determined how many bowl cozies I’d make, each cozy uses 2 layers of fabric and my plan was to make sets of 2 so that’s 4 layers of batting.

Then I got our my yardage or large scraps that are less than 1/2yd, some were too narrow, but most were between 12″ and 18″ and the bowl cozy is 10in so 11in is good, as I was cutting I also tried to match up 2 fabrics x 2 of each and layered them with the batting.

I really think I took around 3-4hrs from start to finish to make 16!

Once I got in the groove of it, it wasn’t that bad and I ladder stitched the openings closed and didn’t top stitch.

My next thing was coiled baskets, have you ever made those?? You use cotton cording- I buy a big “spool” of it, 1/4in x 50yds

Then I got out my bin of scrap binding strips or leftover binding strips and had the kids sort them by color

I then cut each strip in half- cutting as I work, some strips were short, some where about 1.5 binding strips, it didn’t matter if there’s a seam in it, I cut it all in half.

Then I made the baskets- you can youtube or find the directions online, I might even have one, it’s simple and easy with zig zag stitching, the trickiest part is the very beginning but then after that it goes fast!

I was able to make 8 baskets out of that “spool” of rope!

But it hardly put a dent in my binding strip bin!

But my fabric shelves are almost empty AGAIN!! LOL, it seems that as soon as I order fabrics, I have a plan for them and use up most of the fabrics right away! I guess that’s a good thing 🙂

  1. I love both kinds of the bowls you made…very pretty! I looked at the die cutter for those soup bowl cozies but it was a little too pricey for me because I would only be making a few of them. Maybe someday I’ll invest in buying one.

  2. I have no use for a die cutting machine since I don’t do crafting to sell, but love what it does for you, Bea. Your baskets and bowls are very nice in various colors, and the owls are so cute. I also like the scrappy blocks; you know I’m a scrap fan! LOL I have made the baskets and bowl cozies for gifts in the past. It is fun to do.

  3. One day I’ll get around to making some fabric bowls. We could use them here and I’d love to give a bunch as gifts.
