I’m part of the kick off day of the ART with fabric Blog hop hosted by Alida @ tweloquilting
My inspiration for this hop came when I started watching CUPCAKE wars on netflix, one episode was about creating cupcakes to represent artists/ painters etc. and I thought, HEY I have a cupcake accuquilt die!
And I thought of different cupcakes representing different famous paintings or art etc. It would take some “thinking” but should be fun.
Then my son’s accident happened and I decided to reduce the project size and maybe just make a pincushion!-still with a cupcake though! – I had the option of dropping out too, but didn’t want to, I wanted to get back to NORMAL and sew/quilt, so this was actually the first project I made after we got home, I finished it in an afternoon.
So my inspiration was “starry night” by Vincent van Gogh
I picked my fabrics and cut out the cupcake shapes after I ironed on heat n bond onto the back, the small circle was from the serendipity die set.
Then I ironed it onto a 5 1/2” blue square
Then I laid the block on top of a piece of batting and started some thread art! just simple stippling lines in black with the darning/embroidery foot on my machine.
Then added some beige and yellow and blue on the cupcake frosting (hard to see)
Then more blue on the background and beige too.
I then cut another 5 1/2” piece of blue fabric and sewed the pincushion together, stuffed it with crushed walnut shells and whip stitched together.
there is a moon shape on the little circle too
and the church on the bottom right in grey, which I also added to the bottom cupcake cup.
All in all I’m very happy with this pincushion!

(I’m actually going to keep it up, as this is not ANOTHER blog hop I’ve been part of recently where the schedule changed a bunch of times! I know stuff happens, but that’s why YOU plan ahead or modify what you are making- that’s what I did!! My son was in the hospital for 5 days and it threw our lives upside down for 2 weeks and there’s still more to come, but I at least managed to do SOMETHING, not my original plan, but it’s something! and maybe it’s the European in me, but punctuality is a BIG DEAL to me.- Okay rant over! I just feel bad for the hostesses who plan this carefully and then have to move everything around several times!)

What a cute idea! I never would have thought of cupcake art, but it's absolutely perfect–like those painted bulls, cows, chickens, and race cars I've seen in various cities. By placing the art on an unexpected shape, you invite the viewer to really explore what makes it work–the colors, shadows, and shapes. Well done, and I for one really appreciate how you pushed yourself to still participate. I too had things come up but I pushed myself to finish on time because I didn't want to disappoint our hostess Alida or our visitors. You go girl!
