Art with Fabric Blog hop

ArtWithFabricButton-Spring2018

I’m SEW excited to be part of Alida’s blog hop again from tweloquilting

her blog hops are always “different” and a fun challenge!

This time the “theme” was 1+1=3

and I googled it and came up with quite some different answers

First this bible verse came up Genesis 1:1-3

Genesis 1:1-3 New International Version (NIV)

The Beginning

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

In the art world 1+1 elements, like two lines next to each other, creates a 3rd element the background! (I can’t find the site I read that on, but you get the idea!?)

Then there’s also the real life version where 2 people, a man and a woman come together and have a baby so they are 3 now!

With this in mind, I first thought of the secondary (3rd) design of adding 2 things/blocks together and it looks like something else.

So I started to play in EQ8 and with Accuquilt QUBE sets and the Angles set in mind, I came up with this.

It creates a secondary design AND it’s a BABY QUILT.

alternate secondary design

And because of the bible verses, I knew I had this outer space fabric, or at least scraps so that fits well with the verses Winking smile

so that’s pretty much all 3 points!

So I set to work and cut out the pieces with my 8” QUBE and Angles set and had this in no time.

If you follow my blog, you might know that I try to sew as much as possible together in one sitting before I get up to iron, so here’s the 1 round.

2nd round

and 3rd round

IMG_20180514_104435923_HDRIMG_20180514_105424602_HDR

and before long I had all the blocks done

Then I sewed the middle together like this

and added borders

And I quilted in yellow thread with a meandering design with random stars scattered all over it, then did the binding in the green

The finished quilt measures 34” x 42” so a nice baby sized quilt!

Hi Bea, what a lovely baby quilt. You really found all kinds of ways to get to the 1+1=3 theme. Thanks for sharing your process with us.

Fabulous quilt Bea, and love your interpretation of the 1+1=3 theme.

  3. Finding secondary and tertiary patterns is one of my favorite thing about pieced quilts. This is lovely! Your piecing is so precise. I love the inspiration, I get chills reading the first three verses of Genesis. So powerful.
