Are you doing Bonnie’s Mystery QAL?

When I first saw another blog that Bonnie Hunter released the fabric choices for her mystery this year, I quickly went to look at the color choices here.

Allietare!!

I still don’t know if I’ll do it, but I will definitely download each step and maybe do a smaller version- whenever I get around to it of course! but then again I’m a SUCKER for mystery QALs and think they are SEW much fun!

If/when I join, it will be my 5th one I’ve done.

Last year it was Grand Illusion, where I made a smaller version and completely changed the colors and used yardage instead of scraps, I knew that if I liked my fabrics together I would like the end result and I DID!

in 2013 The mystery was Celtic Solstice.

I stuck with her colors and made the full size.

in 2012 it was Easy Street.

I only changed the color Grey to Black and loved the end result and we still have it on our bed!

The first year I joined in 2011 I was still a new quilter and didn’t have a big fabric stash.

The Orca Bay Quilt was still fun.

I didn’t have much red so I used pinks instead, then I didn’t have much Black so I used blues instead but didn’t think to limit to dark blues but I mixed ANY blue in there, so the result didn’t have much contrast. It’s a “look” just not what I hoped for then. For the longest time hubby had it in his office/ man cave in front of the window to block out light so we could watch TV and when the sun was shining thru the quilt it actually looked very cool! and I can’t remember if purple was a color in it or not but I used that too.

I also omitted a border I think.

So this year the colors are

GOLD

RED

BLACK

GREY

and Neutral/white/cream

It will finish 82” x 96 which is BIG, I don’t know if I’ll do that or do half or 1/3 of the blocks, we’ll see.

My fabric stash has grown a LOT since then and so have my scrap bins, so I’m GAME!!

And I think I like the colors and won’t change them. Though that was FUN to do!

Or what about doing 1/4 of the blocks and then one IN her colors and 1 in some wacky color combo? Or a boy and girl one that will end up being 40 x 50 or around that?? Hmm

Even though she won’t reveal GO dies, I will still use them if I have some that will fit 🙂

  1. Thanks for the reminder about the mystery. I did it last year and didn't love the quilt, so I changed it up a bit to make it less busy. It was really fun to do and, like you, I love a good mystery. This year I will be resisting though.

I love all your past myssteries!! I have done all but Orca Bay! I'm thinking I'm not so in love with the colour selection this year (just not my faves) but I'm all in'!! Cant wait!!

I'm off to check out her colors Bea! I don't know if I'll do it either but like you I have done them for the last couple of years. A great way to use up scraps!

What a lovely display of BH mystery quilts. I haven't done the last few as they were too big and too scrappy for my taste. I do have this color combo to work with though.

Looking forward to the mystery quilt. This will be my third one with Bonnie. Mind you I have quite finished last years mystery. It just need the borders sewn on. I better do it so I can start fresh. The one thing set is I won't be making it full size. I am thinking half the size.

  6. I like your Orca Bay-looks like a Monet in your picture. I have done quite a few of the mysteries and only strayed one time in color selection and went with pink instead of red. I really liked how it turned out. I wasn't crazy about this year's colors, but had already decided I wanted to step outside my box and do my own colors. I have them chosen and they are completely different than Bonnie's. I always enjoy seeing the quilts that the colors aren't the same as hers. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I am doing the right thing.
