April’s Challenge for Island Batik ambassadors is Applique!
In January I was at a quilt show and bought this Whooters pattern- you know me- I love owls, so of course I had to have this pattern!!
Then I was thinking about WHAT to applique it on, a big or small quilt, a wall hanging or a bag or purse? I was looking thru my bin of “crafty- non quilt, not wearable patterns” and found this sewing machine cover pattern!
Totally 90s with these colors LOL
I didn’t want the prairie points or the stripes, I just wanted the pattern pieces for the main part of the cover.
I then decided to use this light brown tree print as the background fabric- goes well with owls, right?
and I cut out the pieces!
The batiks that I’ve already used that are “old” I had put in piles with my yardage but I pulled them all out to find just the right OWL colors- I was overwhelmed with how much batik I have!!
I traced the owl patterns onto heat n bond (Solveig and Sonja each picked out their favorite owls from the pattern and that’s the two I used) Then I picked out the owl fabrics and sorted them
and ironed to the backs of the batiks!
Then cut out the pieces to see if the colors looked right.
I didn’t like the cheeks of the left owl, so I traced another one and picked another color
much better!
Then fused them all down and had the owls look at each other, I guess it’s a couple, even though the males are the pretty ones usually in birds, here the left one is the girl and the right one is the male.
I first picked this light brown for appliqueing but then decided on a dark brown instead and used this one for the quilting instead
after I appliqued the pieces down I stipple quilted just onto batting.
I did this on my domestic machine, which was fun for a change and good to keep that skill
Then I started sewing it together, this will be the only time I would see the back of the applique
and VOILA! my spare sewing machine has a nice cover now
My main sewing machine is too big for a cover and I use it every day, so what’s the point of a cover??
and I decided to keep the batiks separately on the shelf now
Oh that's too stinking cute!! I too would have changed the left owl cheek color:) much better now.
