All about Strings Blog hop

I’m so excited to be part of this hop that Carla from creatin in the sticks is hosting!

I had already started something when I saw the announcement so of course I jumped on it!

Recently I bought this String frenzy book by Bonnie hunter and I’ve been making RSC19 blocks from it too

But this time I needed a finished project so I picked one project that I hadn’t made a block from yet and it’s called Xing!

Bonnie always makes HUGE quilts, I don’t, first of all I like small quilts and just time didn’t allow it, so I picked a 4×5 layout of the star blocks and notated how many foundation pieces I needed

The star blocks are 6” finished, so the string blocks are 3”, of course I could use my Accuquilt QUBE set for that! so easily I cut blocks for that!

I decided on light blue instead of scrappy as my light blue scrap bin was over flowing!

these small block sections  I had the die that fit

Some side triangle blocks were also needed and I had to foundation piece those, but I managed to do them all pretty quickly

Then I got busy working on other projects and put this aside for a while also while thinking about the star blocks, time kind of got away from me and instead of the star block being on point (in the already on point setting) I decided on a simple variable star instead and I then picked orange scraps and then used my 6” qube set and also white scraps and cut out pieces for 20 blocks! easy peasy!

I forgot to take closeups of the star blocks, so I must have finished them quickly and wanted to move on. I then stuck all the blocks on my design wall and decided to have a yellow sashing instead of the teal in the book and I picked a small orange dotted print for the sashing cornerstone squares, let me tell you, those things were TINY!

Here’s the finished top, it’s just fun and scrappy but still “planned” as I stuck to just a few colors.

I quilted it with a pointy swirl all over and added more yellow binding.

The quilt ended up being about 39” x 48”

So a great baby donation quilt size.

here’s a close-up

For the backing I used a dotted red flannel that I bought by mistake from connecting threads, it was perfect for the back.

I’ve shown before how I got these photography umbrella lights, I’m still experimenting with them, how I want them positioned, if I want overhead light still, open or pulled curtains etc and I still need a backsplash  canvas thing, but I haven’t quite decided on that yet either.

Here’s a view of how I had it set up for this quilt

A fun quilt to make and I love that it was basically “free” since I used JUST scraps! Now what else can I make from this book??

in case you haven’t seen other participants, here’s the list

Thanks again for looking and thanks to Carla for hosting!

Wow this is wonderfully bright and fun. It is perfect for a baby quilt. I love how you improvised and made it basically your own. Thank you for sharing and for inspiring today. quilting dash lady at comcast dot net

  13. Your quilt is really nice. Sometimes I make a smaller version also, but not really small. Love the colors and fabrics you chose.

Free quilts are the best, aren't they?? Great job of making a "Bonnie quilt" your own – love your color choices!

your colors are so fun and summery! I love it! and very good to make it smaller – it makes those projects way more do-able!

  16. A really great quilt. I love Bonnie Hunter's designs and hope to make one in the near future. I didn't make the Good Fortune quilt, but I collected the directions and bought the fabric. I just need to get some quilty things out of the way 1st. Nancy A: rangerer@sbcglobal.net

  17. Love your quilt! I can see that it would be helpful for me to separate my strings by color. I have definitely been encouraged and inspired by this hop. Nancy A: rangerer@sbcglobal.net

  18. This is so pretty. I like the strings and the colors of the stars. Great quilt.

  19. I love this quilt. These are 3 of my 4 favorite colors. The orange scrappy stars are so pretty bordered in yellow and a blue background. I really love this!!
