accuquilt Go Challenge–Blazing star

accuquilt go challenge

This month’s challenge is the Blazing star die by Eleanor Burns!

it’s probably the first die I bought besides the mix and match die set when I got my Go! cutter, and I think I’ve only made 2 projects with it.

So I figured it was time to try again

I had the die all marked already

and decided to use these veteran batiks from Island batiks

( I got 1/2yd of each of these wonderful veteran fabrics)

very quickly cut them out!

Now with this die, half of the fabrics have to be right side up and the other half right side down, I only paid attention to the veteran fabric as it had words on it, the rest of the batiks, it was hard to tell which side is up anyways!

pieces are cut and laid out

The I sewed the outer edges together

2014-08-25 017

and then the inner ones, overlapping 1/4” for the seam allowance

2014-08-25 018

the blocks went together very quickly and I laid them out again to double check what it would look like

2014-08-25 019

look what happens if you flip the blocks!

2014-08-25 020

here’s the pile of 1/4 blocks ready to be sewn together

and blocks sewn together!

then the top!

2014-08-26 001

I ironed the seams open on the back to prevent too much bulk!

2014-08-26 002

And “Tee-Dah” (that’s Sonja’s way of saying TA-DA!)

the top is done with a simple border!

2014-08-26 003

Here is the quilt all quilted.

It measures 27” x 27”

and a close up of the quilting. I did straight lines (ruler work) on the stars, a tiny ribbon design on the inner border and straight lines on the outer border.

For the backing I used a light brown print (there’s a label at the bottom too but it’s hard to see)

Boo Hoo Hoooooo – Missed out again (tee hee) I do dearly love my Stars and this one's no different, except for the back of it, which looks like it could be a block itself! It's unusual to see that. I'd be totally stuck if I went into Island Batiks to buy that fabric, because I loved all of them, the swirls, dots, stars, solids they're all gorgeous. Wouldn't it be great to use this fabric for a 'Quilts of Valor' quilt? Especially if the vaguely camouflage and the Stars & Stripes fabric were used for a part of it.
