I was SEW excited to get this OWL appliqué die from Accuquilt.
I wanted to make something a little different and had the idea of a stuffed owl/ pin cushion.
I found some scraps of batiks from Island Batik
I ironed on heat n bond on the back of the fabrics
And cut pieces out on my GO BIG!
I cut out two of the body shape, since it will be a stuffed owl.
Then fused down the pieces with the iron again after removing the paper backing
I had cut out 4 of the wings in just batiks and stitched not even a 1/4” all the way around two leaving the top opened.
Then used a turning tool (from amazon- can’t live without it now!)
Once turned they were super tiny, so I decided to make them feet for the owl instead
Then I cut out two more wings and appliquéd everything down with a button hole stitch in pink thread
Then I pinned the two feet to the bottom and laid another owl body on top, right sides together and sewed 1/4” all the way around leaving an opening on the side.
I filled the owl with crushed walnut shells – I also got these from amazon- it’s actually lizard bedding, a big bag is cheap and I had an old cracker tub that I store it in.
after I filled him/her I whip stitched it closed with a needle and thread.
Here it is…. I guess it’s a girl, since SHE is pink 🙂
I wanted to try a more traditional appliqued block too so I found some browns and tan fabrics for the owl
and again ironed on Heat n Bond onto the back and cut out the pieces
I cut out an extra eyeball in yellow and used it as a full moon in the background, I also free handed a branch in black and cut that out and ironed everything onto a fun blue background
I used black thread and my embroidery foot on the machine and stitched a sloppy double line all the way around all the shapes, it’s quick and easy and looks more “modern” I think 🙂
Then I decided to make it into a pillow and used my log cabin GO die to cut out pieces, this was more of a “planned” block so I had some extra strips after I cut them all out, but I can always use them later:)
I then sewed together the log cabin block with blue on one half and black on the other half.
The finished block is 12”
I then sewed a zipper onto two pieces of the blue background fabric and made it into a pillow and I had a pillow shape already that fit, I’m very happy with how this turned out 🙂
On the accuquilt website there’s lots of different ideas for using the owl die.
