50 states QAL Hawaii

This week’s block is Hawaii.

The pattern had appliquéd flowers on the basket, but it was the only appliquéd block in the whole quilt so I thought I’d just use a busy print in the background instead, we’ll see how it looks at the end.

Here’s some facts about Hawaii – the ALOHA state

Hawaii was the 50th state admitted to the union on August 20th, 1959.

First settled by Polynesians sailing from other Pacific islands between A.D. 300 and 600, Hawaii was visited in 1778 by British captain James Cook, who called the group the Sandwich Islands.

Hawaii was a native kingdom throughout most of the 19th century, when the expansion of the sugar industry (pineapple came after 1898) meant increasing U.S. business and political involvement. In 1893, Queen Liliuokalani was deposed, and a year later the Republic of Hawaii was established with Sanford B. Dole as president. Following annexation (1898), Hawaii became a U.S. territory in 1900.

The state of Hawaii consists of eight main islands: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe and the Big Island of Hawaii.

Hawaii is the most isolated population center on the face of the earth. Hawaii is 2,390 miles from California; 3,850 miles from Japan; 4,900 miles from China; and 5,280 miles from the Philippines.

Hawaii is the only state that grows coffee.

More than one-third of the world’s commercial supply of pineapples comes from Hawaii.

From east to west Hawaii is the widest state in the United States.

Hawaii’s highest peak is Mauna Kea (13,796 ft). Mauna Loa (13,679 ft) is the largest volcanic mountain in the world by volume.

Hawaii has the only royal palace in the U.S. (Iolani)

The Most Southern StateIf your focus was narrowed to this country alone, you could consider Hawaii the South Pole. To be more specifically, you could consider Ka Lae the South Pole since it is the most southern point of the country (18:54:49 N 155:41:00 W).
What’s even more interesting about this part of the state is the constant wind that blows at 27 knots per hour around the clock all year long. Interesting facts about Hawaii like this are useful because you would know never to move here if you get earaches easily!
