2024 quilt project list week 41

Grandpa passed away Wednesday morning, 11 days after Grandma….He was right, when they lived at our house back in May and she was not well, he told her, she lived a good long life and whenever she’d die, he’d die soon after that… and he did!

It was kind of odd this time, Monday morning he had the “death rattle” and we knew it was near the end, our CNA came to take over but also called a nurse and said it’s probably a matter of minutes or hours or a few days, we all went over a bit and Dan sent the CNA back home (she had car trouble anyways) and Dan spent another night there with almost no sleep.

Solveig had “fall break” from Meredith Monday and Tuesday and Bjorn took off Tuesday because a week or so before we had planned a Zoo trip, because Dan hadn’t gone with us in a long time! So Tuesday morning, our CNA came back and we were really torn about going to the zoo in case we’d get “the call” but we all decided we needed to get away and if we got the call, we’d only be an hour away, so we went! Bjorn finally got a roommate too, Niraj from Nepal, they were old roommates at Wingate and now Niraj got a job somewhat close by so he moved in last weekend and went with us to the Zoo this time.

While there, we did get a hospice call, but it wasn’t to turn around and go home….

We had a great time at the Zoo! After dinner I think Dan fell asleep around 7.30 and me a bit after 8PM… In the morning we took Chewy for a walk and Renee (our CNA) called us a bit after 7am and told us Grandpa had passed away, so we woke up the girls and got ready to go over there, Solveig hadn’t got back to Meredith yet and I called Bjorn and he had just left to go to work so he turned around and went there too, again it was a beautiful morning! and it worked out that we were could all be there, hospice showed up and called the funeral home and the funeral people looked at Dan and commented that he was JUST there Monday to pick up his mom’s ashes! So it was a total Déjà vu thing… We’re more relieved than anything now, it’s been so long and exhausting, especially the last 5-6 months! Though I’ve been the “driver” for them since 2020.

Grandma was 93 and Grandpa was 98!

Some of you have asked about MY mom, she’s ok, she’s in a nursing home in Denmark and has the same problems, she’s had for a while, but they are taking care of her and she’s in the best place possible I think. There’s not much I can do about it from over here, so in a way, it’s “out of sight, out of mind” and with my in-laws, I’ve had my mind on other things lately…. Dan does think I should book a trip over there, though now it’s fall and we have birthdays and holidays coming up so I don’t think it will be until next year. Unless of course I get a CALL from the nursing home.

  1. I’m truly sorry for your loss, but happy that your in-laws are now together. Very special that all your kids were able to join you at such a time, as well as you had a break with your kids (and Bjorn’s roommate) to go to the zoo. Your zoo looks amazing. Great photos. And I’m impressed with all your beautiful quilts. I feel like I just attending a quilt show.
