2024 quilt project list week 29

What a week!

I mentioned last week that we got a referral to hospice last Wednesday and by the weekend it hadn’t gone thru.

Saturday I went to pick up Sonja after a youth retreat thru our church and on the way back a neighbor called that EMS was at my in-laws’ house AGAIN, Dan drove over there, we found out that grandma had fallen and hit her head and the alert button had called 911 or their dispatch…. so they took her to UNC, I took the girls home and Bjorn and I packed stuff for Dan and dropped it off while he was with his dad. Grandpa has such severe dementia, he asked if everything was alright “No, we’re going to the hospital because grandma fell and hit her head”, ” Oh really, I didn’t know!” (EMS was JUST there maybe 30 min before) “So is everything alright?” No we’re going to the hospital to see grandma, she hit her head”, “Oh really? so is everything alright?”, ” No, let’s just go…”

Grandma got discharged at 5am! and we drove her home to their house where Dan was and he stayed overnight, two hours later he woke up because he heard a bump and grandma had fallen in the bathroom and hit her ear! She was ok but bruised up, and X-rays and CT scans were ok from the hospital too, she’s just so weak and confused now and talking nonsense sometimes.

After taking a nap Sunday morning, I called our friend Renee from church who’s a CNA who we hired to help with them during the day, if she could come Monday (she was supposed to come Tuesday-Thursday) and after talking with her, she said she used to have a CNA job for elderly people where she slept at their house! and she’s willing to do that again for us/them….Of course we’d still pay her hourly. It gets to be a lot of $ but still cheaper than a nursing home for 2 people! and we know this won’t last long, so she came Monday, but had to go home at night and pack, then came back Tuesday and stayed until Friday at 5 when my husband then moved in, meanwhile hospice got involved and they are taking over as “doctors” so no more going to appointments/ hospitals, they take over the medicine (which we are still nervous about) and then other support for us, not that they stay at the house at all, nurses will come and check on them once a week or more and they are getting her a hospital bed and other stuff.

It’s still so new to us, so if any of you have any experience with it, please email me!

And grandpa is on hospice too because of his dementia, he drives everyone crazy because he gets up at night, opens the front door, turns on lights, wants ice cream etc… every few hours! Dan and Renee won’t get much sleep, and that’s how it was at our house for 3 weeks before we moved them back.

  1. Deb Glessner

Good morning, my heart goes out to you and your family. This is one of the most challenging and difficult times to be going thru. I have had three family members placed in hospice and this was an excellent time to have hospice members be a part of our family and family member. Hospice is a Medicare benefit and you could utilize as much as possible of what benefits they allow. Hospice is not only there for the parents, they’re there to help support the family members too. They help with the transition of that which is going to be inevitable. Please use them as much as it is allowed. I was once told this saying and it really does hold true to life as you care for a family member. “It is better to provide quality versus quantity of care”. So when you are experiencing the point of exhaustion never hesitate to seek out help. There is also the option of a facility placement under hospice. This would help to support the quality care that you would be able to provide. Thoughts and prayers continue for you and your family that this transition will assist you in this process.

  2. I’m so sorry about your inlaws – being caregivers is very difficult. I was a caregiver for my brother and my mom before they passed away. It was easier for my mom because she was in a hospice house and although it was expensive, it was much easier on my sister and me. And the hospice people were fabulous! When my husband got sick with cancer, I cared for him at home – we had hospice coming in once a week. However, it got to where he was getting up and falling and I couldn’t lift him and had to call 911 for lift assistance for a hospice patient. He didn’t seem to understand that he couldn’t get up and walk because he was too weak. It was a weekend and our nurse was due to come on Monday. I was going to talk to her about a facility because I knew I couldn’t care for him alone anymore. However, he passed away early Monday morning so that never came to be. Medicare is frustrating because they don’t seem to cover much if a care facility is involved and it gets really expensive very fast. But I was up against a wall and didn’t have a choice any more. I wish you all the best in caring for your inlaws – it’s a very difficult job but caring for someone you love can be rewarding too. But the biggest help in dealing with all this was my faith – don’t give up!
