2024 QAL block 1

It’s time for the color of the month QAL, block #1

It’s a simple “Sister’s Choice” block with small squares and HST.

All the blocks for this QAL finish at 10″ and uses the 8″ QUBE set – but I also provide rotary cutting instructions, and if you have a different QUBE set, you can use that as well, your blocks will just be bigger or smaller than the QUBE set, the blocks are 5/4 the size of the QUBE set, so in this case 10″ using the 8″ QUBE set 🙂

We’ll be using scraps plus the background color (white) which EQ says is around 1.5yds, then the sashing and border colors we’ll worry about later!

And since I’ve revealed the blocks on the picture below and you can kind of see it on the QAL info picture, I figured I’d show it now too 🙂

Now let’s get started

Get out your yellow scraps and the background color and then dies #2 and #5 from the 8″ QUBE set

With die #2 cut out 4 of a dark yellow and 4 of another yellow, plus 5 of the background white

(Rotary cut 2 1/2″ squares)

With die #5 cut out 8 of another yellow and 8 of the background white

(4–2 7/8″ squares cut diagonally to get 8 pieces)

Because I know I’ll use these shapes again with the background fabric, I cut a 5 1/2″ and 3 3/4″ WOF strip of the white and cut out the pieces on the dies, then I can save the leftover strips for next month 🙂

I love that I can lay 8 layers on the Accuquilt dies and with the triangles, it cuts off the dog ears!

Sew 8 small HSTs together from the triangles.

Then with 4 HSTs sew them together with the background white squares, and also 4 with the darker yellow squares, plus sew the remaining 4 yellow squares together with 4 background white squares as shown below.

Now sew the HST units together like this with the darker yellow and the background white squares as shown for the corners of the blocks.

Then sew the block together with the yellow/white square units and the remaining background white square in the middle, easy peasy!
