-For some reason my post didn’t publish, so I copied it over to here and deleted the old one,
I haven’t done much sewing as we went to the NC mountains for a few days for 4th of July, it’s a 3hr drive from our house, first we went to a REAL mine and toured it (it’s not a working mine, but WAS until the 70s I think it was)
part of the “package” was to MINE ourselves, among all the rocks were special rocks we found, it was a lot of fun! The kids also bought a big geode!
after that we were supposed to go to a house we had rented on VRBO and with spotty cell data in the mountains, I eventually got a message that the house wouldn’t be ready until at least after 6pm, so we went to Beech Mountain as there were supposed to be fireworks and fun stuff for the kids, it was at a ski resort but the fireworks were on Saturday! so we ended up buying mediocre burgers and left after anja did a bit in a bounce house.
We got to the house a bit after 6pm and the cleaning DUDE was just putting supplies in his car! The house was nice, the view was AMAZING! but then we found out the A/C didn’t work right, we slept ok as the temp outside went down so it was fine, but the next day the house was hot again (though we were out and about most of the day)
The next morning we went to go hiking and Bjorn picked something that was kid friendly, it was called Elk River falls and it was a short rocky hike down to this waterfall and there were some young people in the water
so Bjorn and Dan decided to go in as well, the water was super cold but refreshing! I was standing on a large rock and it was slippery but nice to sit on, Sonja came closer and slipped, she got soaked fully clothed but didn’t get hurt, other than her pride, she cried and was so angry, then at the same time another group came and I could tell there was a GUY in charge and one of the others was an adult with down syndrome, the guy in charge asked me how the water was, I said cold and slippery and pointed to Sonja and the guy signaled to the rest of the group that they couldn’t go in, I go see the disappointment on their faces and felt so bad, they had really looked forward to getting in, it was just slippery right by the water edge! Sonja still cried as we walked back too and it’s hard to explain that stuff happens but sometimes you also gotta suck it up and deal with it and move on and not ruin it for everyone else (we had a long talk)
most of us were at least partly wet, so we went to the grocery store on the way back to the house and bought stuff to make dinner! The house also had a pool table in the basement and we played that a lot! then at some point in the evening Dan called us to look outside and there was a perfect rainbow (actually a triple rainbow) perfectly over grandfather mountain!
The next morning we had to check out of the house, we went on blue ridge parkway and stopped several places to take pictures
we went to drive up to grandfather mountain and realized it was $24 a person! we had driven enough around so we skipped it and instead we wanted to see this mineral museum so we changed the GPS and drove on….
Then we drove by the road to Linville Falls and turned in, Bjorn had really wanted to hike on grandfather mountain but I had been to linville falls with some friends years ago, so this was perfect! (Linville caverns was closed on Tuesday and Wesnesdays and require masks so we couldn’t do that anyways)
The hike was .8miles I think with 4 look out places, we got hot and sticky by the end but it was worth it!
we also saw the mineral museum, it was tiny but cute and FREE! then we left to have lunch and headed home and got home at 7pm! 3 busy days, with bumps on the road but I think it was fun.
