We’re still working with the 8″ QUBE set and this week it’s die shapes #2 and #13 and #14 from the companion angles set

If you don’t have this set already, I highly recommend it, I just love kite blocks and triangle in a square blocks!

With dark blue cut out (4) of shape #13- I was able to use leftover fabrics from earlier, if you can’t then cut a 5″ WOF strip.

With white cut a 5″ WOF strip and cut out (24) of shape #14 triangles, save (8) for this block and put the rest aside.

With red use leftover fabrics or cut a 5 1/2″ WOF and cut out (19) of shape #2 squares, save (10) for this block, set the rest aside.

Also grab (10) white #2 squares cut previously.

For rotary cutting:

in dark blue cut out 4 3/4″ x 4 3/4″ squares and 63″ degree angles (yeah try to figure that out??) or maybe you have a tri-rec ruler? the finished block size is 4″ so 4 1/2″ unfinished, but out (4)triangles

With white, if you have a tri-rec ruler cut out (24) side triangles, keep 8 for this block and put the rest aside, EQ says to cut 5 1/4″ x 2 5/8″ rectangles and cut diagonally. I haven’t tried this.

with red cut (19) 2 1/2″ squares, save (10) for this block, put the rest aside.

also pick (10) white 2 1/2″ previously cut!

Start by making (5) four patches in red and white and (4) triangle in a square blocks with the dark blue triangles and white side triangles.

Then sew the block together like this with the red squares going diagonally the same way!

Wanna do one more block?

Let’s do Kansas!

It’s a pretty easy block too.

Here’s some facts about Kansas

Kansas flag

Entered Union (rank): Jan. 29, 1861 (34)

Nicknames: Sunflower State; Jayhawk State

Origin of name: From a Sioux word meaning “people of the south wind”

Dodge City is the windiest city in the United States.

At one time it was against the law to serve ice cream on cherry pie in Kansas.

The first black woman to win an Academy Award was Kansan Hattie McDaniel. She won the award for her role in “Gone with the Wind.”

Smith County is the geographical center of the 48 contiguous states.

The public swimming pool at the Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City occupies half a city block and holds 2 1/2 million gallons of water.

Handel’s Messiah has been presented in Lindsborgeach at Easter since 1889.

There are 27 Walnut Creeks in the state.

What does a horse lie down on during surgery? They lay on waterbeds specially designed for them if you are at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the Kansas State University. This is one of the best Kansas facts if you are looking for fun trivia questions.

Be Nice with Knives
If you see a man wearing a striped suit in Natoma, resist the urge to use them for target practice with your knives.
Law in this city dictates that you cannot throw knives at men dressed in striped suits.

Whale Watching
There isn’t much water in Kansas and the land doesn’t border on the ocean. Spotting a whale in this state would be a miracle unless you’re at Sea World. So, why is it that hunting whales is illegal in the state? You can only wonder.

You’ll only need 2 dies for this one from the 8″ QUBE set, #5 and #6!

With dark Red cut 3 3/4″ WOF strip and cut out (9) of shape #6, keep (5) and save the rest

Grab (4) white of shape #6 already cut.

Also grab (20) of #5 triangles already cut.

With dark blue, cut a 3 3/4″ WOF strip and cut (30) of shape #5 triangles, also using leftover scraps, save (16) for this block, put the rest aside.

Rotary cutting:

With Dark red, cut (9) 3 3/8″ squares, save (5) put the rest aside

Also grab (4) white 3 3/8″ squares already cut.

  1. No ice cream on cherry pie in Kansas! Too funny.
    Thanks for posting early Bea!

  2. Are you gonna be using the aqquilt die 8 blocks and the companion angle? I only have the 8 inch dies. And the angles. Are these block of the month? If so how can I join?

    1. If you look at the Quilt along tab, I show which qube sets we’ll use. The companions for 8″, 6″ QUBE sets too, and 12″ we used for the first two blocks.

  3. Harriet wetherell

Thank you for the blocks using my Go, I could use my book for inspiration but this is more fun. Texas is my block now. NY/NJ hope they are on the list.
